My Story
The idea behind Mod Thrift Society came to me when I was a graduate student trying to survive on my measly stipend: despite my lack of resources, I wanted to live well.
To me, living well means my home is cozy and beautiful and being proud of how I present myself to the world every day.
To live well on a tight budget, I only bought things that were on sale. Going to thrift shops, dollar stores, and garage sales was like going on holiday for me. Groceries. Clothes. Household goods. If it was on sale, I bought it and made it work.
Because one rarely finds things that go together in clearance aisles of the grocery store, the local thrift shop, and the dollar stores, I had to get creative. I put together ingredients I’ve never worked with before to make cheap, yet satisfying meals. I searched for clothes that can be worn every season and coordinated with many other pieces to create myriad outfits. When it came to household goods, I had two criteria: longevity and beauty. I always asked myself: will this item last me a long time?
Though ninety percent of my things came from different places—that is, they were not purchased as coordinated sets from big box retailers—I’ve managed to make it all work. I have built a cozy, functional, and beautiful home for myself.
I have gotten very good at living well on a budget.
I started Mod Thrift Society because living well with very little is my passion.
Mod Thrift Society curates its collection of gently used clothes and household goods with these guiding principles in mind:
High Quality. If it's high quality, it will last a long time.
Stylish Simplicity. Fad-ish things go out of style so quickly. Simple and understated items look good all the time.
Affordability. Save money. Live better.
Versatility. An article of clothing that can be used in many different ways is cheaper than an article of clothing that can coordinate with very few things.
